2003

  • December ­ New Downtown ends 2003 with 800 members, 6,500 messages posted, and growing attendance at Neighborhood Watch. Most frequent topics discussed include Downtown filming, new loft projects, art galleries, need for nightlife, fighting crime, and neighborhood council activities.
  • October ­ 2nd New Downtown Halloween Walking Tour with after-party at Cole's.
  • August ­ HDCA name is discontinued. New Downtown launches monthly Neighborhood Watch to "take back the streets." Residents walk the neighborhood with LAPD and BID patrol one night per month, discussing issues and solutions.
  • July ­ New Downtowners hold first meeting with RRM Design, the firm hired through NBG funds for the Historic Downtown Streetscape Design Plan.
  • February ­ New Downtowners mobilize to oppose a freestanding McDonalds at Broadway & Olympics. Zoning approval was denied.
  • January ­ Monthly HDCA meetings continue. New Downtown co-founders organize a tenants group in their loft building as a pilot project to negotiate location filming inconvenience fees for residents, generating approximately $18,000 in funds divided among 30 loft units through the end of 2003.
2002

  • December ­ New Downtown ends 2002 with 600 members, average meeting attendance of 40 residents, and 4,000 messages posted to the list. Hot topics for 2002 were Downtown filming activity, need for sidewalk cleaning, need for more Downtown retail and building code enforcement, and discussion on current retail, favorite retail destinations, and promotion of retail, gallery, and restaurant openings.
  • October ­ City changes name of TNI to Neighborhood Block Grant (NBG) Program. HDCA's committee continues monthly meetings to select projects & lobby for funds.
  • September ­ New Downtown renames monthly community meetings "Historic Downtown Community Association (HDCA)". Project Safe Sleep opens at the Midnight Mission, prioritized and funded through our TNI program.
  • July ­ New Downtown co-founders help plant the first of 30 trees on Main Street paid for by the TNI program.
  • April ­ DLANC becomes a certified neighborhood council. New Downtown continues supporting the group through outreach activities and election planning.
  • March ­ New Downtown co-founders join forces with Old Bank District resident leader Tom Burrows to establish monthly Historic Downtown resident meetings to address quality of life issues, with representatives from LAPD, Mayor's & Council offices, and Business Improvement Districts. These replace the weekly Wednesday night social events.
  • February ­ New Downtown launches first version of online community guide.
2001

  • December ­ New Downtown list has grown to 400 members, with over 1,000 messages posted to the discussion list in 2001. Frequent topics of first year included restoring historic buildings, "greening" of Downtown, art & community events, escalating rents, Downtown history, volunteering, and homelessness.
  • October ­ New Downtown's First Haunted Downtown Halloween Walking Tour, led by New Downtowner Adam Martin. New Downtowners are elected to all 3 resident seats and 2 community seats on the CRA City Center PAC.
  • September ­ New Downtown helps re-launch TNI meetings with new Mayor and provides past meeting notes. Committee identifies the following funding priorities: streetscape plan; building code enforcement; adding potted trees and filling empty treeboxes; financial incentives to encourage retail businesses in the neighborhood.
  • June ­ New Downtown co-founders help organize the first planning meeting for the Downtown LA Neighborhood Council (DLANC); continue serving on planning committee and write certification application.
  • May ­ New Downtown "Wednesday Nights" begin. Residents meet weekly on Wednesday night at Cole's to socialize and discuss Downtown revitalization.
  • April ­ New Downtown promotes first meeting of Historic Downtown Targeted Neighborhood Initiative (TNI), funding for community revitalization and public improvements in Historic Downtown, and continues TNI meeting notices and summaries during City transition.
  • March ­ New Downtown email discussion list is established by Marie Condron and Ian Trivers. Any member can "post" a message to the entire group instantly.
